Coming back home, seeing my brother’s family and my father…had set off some kind of an alarm inside me. Ever since we visited the nursing home and I spoke to my father, there was this ding, ding, ding! going off in me. I couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that I had no kids. Freddie and I had given our father a reason to live, a reason to try to make a success of himself. He had a family, one that was willing to care for him in his old age.

Who would I have? Would anyone visit me when I grew old and didn’t have an office to go to anymore? Was I destined to die alone?

They were morbid thoughts, but I couldn’t get them out of my head.

For some time, I had managed to distract myself by making love to Karen, by worshipping her body, but now that I’d come home, those thoughts were back in my head again.

She was lying next to me in bed, and I realized I’d said my thoughts out loud. It wasn’t exactly the kind of pillow-talk she was expecting. She’d grown silent. Obviously, this was awkward for her. Everything about this trip to River Valley was undoubtedly awkward for her.

“Sorry. Forget I said anything. I don’t mean to pile all this stuff on you.”

Karen’s breasts heaved underneath the bedsheet. She’d covered herself with it and I had a strong urge to pull it away. I wanted to witness her beautiful body again.

“So what are you going to do about it?” she asked, and I wasn’t sure what she was talking about. I looked at her and realized she was glaring. She was upset about something.

“What?”

“Your drive to have an heir.”

“An heir! You make me sound like royalty,” I said with a smirk.

Karen looked away. Her mouth was still firmly pressed together. She couldn’t see the humor in this at all.

“What else is it? You want an heir to your property and money. That is the only reason you want a child, right? Not because you want an actual family.”

There was an anger in her voice and I searched her eyes for the meaning.

“Is there a problem here?” I asked.

Karen sat up in bed, clinging to the bedsheet. I watched as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed and then started looking for her discarded clothes. I wanted to tell her she didn’t have to leave. I was looking forward to going to sleep with her lying next to me.

“What is the problem?” I asked again. I sat up too, leaning myself against the bedhead.

“There is no problem,” she snapped.

“Is this because I said I don’t want a family? You think it’s messed up for me to want a kid without an actual family?”

She slipped the blouse over her head and started pulling up her jeans.

“I don’t actually have a reason to be mad at you,” she said.

“But you are.”

“It just…I don’t know…it drives me up the wall.”

“What does?”

Karen was fully dressed now.
